Zanzibar Charter Guide

Many visitors think that Stone Town is the capital of Zanzibar, but the capital of Zanzibar is actually Zanzibar City, where the ancient town of Stone Town is located.

Stone Town

The centre point of Zanzibari culture, this UNESCO site is famous for its elaborate wooden carvings, coral buildings and narrow, winding streets. The subtly different carvings can be seen in the doors of most buildings and reflect social status, ethnicity and religion.

House of Wonders

A 19th-century landmark in Stone Town, this Portuguese-influenced building is the largest and tallest building in the district. Located on the old town’s seafront, it was the first building in Zanzibar to have electricity and the first in East Africa to have an elevator.

Pemba Island

Nicknamed the “Green Island”, Pemba produces much of the region’s cloves. Hilly and fertile, it is the perfect island to unwind in nature. Visit Misali, a marine conservation area that offers some of the best diving in East Africa, for an underwater experience you’ll never forget.

Mafia Island

Much less busy than its sister island, Mafia Island, it is known for offering some of the best scuba diving in the world. The waters around the island are extremely fertile and home to a number of whale sharks and humpback whales.

Chole Island

Stop by this small island to visit one of the only fruit bat sanctuaries for the Comoros lesser fruit bat in East Africa. Afterwards, explore the decaying 19th-century ruins that dot the island and take in the sea views from the deck of your yacht.
