Surrounded by glistening azure seas, its stunning coastline is home to over 70 different beaches, not including its many inlets and bays. Let its wide, sandy beaches and secluded bays, which offer excellent swimming, diving and snorkelling, enchanting you as you learn all about the island’s unique culture.

Elba Charter Guide

Home to just 30,000 inhabitants, Elba’s two main towns include Portoferraio and Campo nell’Elba. First inhabited by the Ilvati tribe from Liguria who named the island Ilva, Elba was later on inhabited by the Etruscans and later by the Romans, who safeguarded the island and its rich deposits of iron and its mud baths.
Portoferraio Yacht

Portoferraio

The biggest town on the island and main port, Portoferraio, is nestled on the crescent-shaped bay. It retains its Renaissance beauty, filled with beautiful little seaside restaurants and high-end boutiques. Explore this old fortress town’s winding streets and walls to learn about its interesting history.

Villa Dei Mulini

The winter residence of Napoleon, the villa is situated on the cliffs above Le Viste beach, about halfway between Forte Falcone and Forte Stella. Although the villa is not as grand as the one in San Martino, his summer residence and the Demidoff Gallery, it’s still fascinating to visit.

Capoliveri

A visit to the Ginevero mine, the only underground mine on the island that’s still accessible, is the best way to learn about the island’s mining past. Located in Capoliveri, iron was the main resource of the town and placed the island on Mediterranean trade routes.

Volterraio

Hike up the hillside to the castle of Volterraio. This fortification dates back to the year 1000 and is one of the few fortresses Turkish pirates never entered. Protected by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, it was lovingly restored and offers breathtaking views of the gulf of Portoferraio.

Palmaiola

A tiny island just 3 kilometres from Elba, Palmaiola remains uninhabited. Head ashore and hike up to the lighthouse. See how many species of marine birds you recognise before trekking back down and enjoying a refreshing swim in the clear waters.
