EDGEØYA

The third-biggest island in the Svalbard archipelago, Edgeøya is a part of one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the region – the Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve. Home to a variety of wildlife, from reindeer and arctic foxes to polar bears, large herds of walrus are usually seen here as well.

HINLOPEN STRAIT

When ice at the north end of Hinlopenstretet prevents a complete circumnavigation of Spitsbergen, longer Svalbard cruises will attempt to explore the strait’s mid and southern sections before returning around Spitsbergen’s southern end. Many expedition leaders are eager to enter the strait, which contains two of Svalbard’s most spectacular sights.

AMSTERDAMØYA & DANSKØYA

Visit the historic islands of Amsterdamøya and Danskøya to learn more about the history of the region. Amsterdamøya Island was home to the Danish and Dutch whaling station Smeerenburg in the early 1600s, which served as Europe’s northernmost outposts. Now a habitat for nesting Arctic terns, it is a stunning natural reserve. Danskøya Island was the launch site of Salomon Andrée and two companions, who tried and failed to reach the North Pole by hydrogen balloon in 1897.

BJORNØYA

The southernmost island of the archipelago, it is home to breathtaking landscapes. Go ashore with your tender and visit a few of the gorgeous sea cliffs and caves before taking in the stark, surreal beauty of the coastline from the deck of your charter yacht.
