Day 1

King George Island & Maxwell Bay

The largest of the South Shetlands and many tourists’ first stop in Antarctica, King George Island is densely packed with stations and has less than 10% ice cover across its 1295 square kilometers. Because of the numerous research stations on the island, King George Island now serves as an aerodrome for flights to Antarctica and is known as the continent’s unofficial capital. Aside from its scientific significance, the island is a haven for wildlife including Elephant, Weddell and Leopard seals, and colonies of Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins.

Day 2

South Shetland Island

The South Shetlands are named after the Scottish Shetland Islands, located at the equivalent latitude in the northern hemisphere. These wildlife-rich islands are located at Antarctica’s most northern tip, on the edge of the Drake Passage. Around the islands, there are numerous penguin colonies, seals, and seabirds. As the most accessible land in Antarctica, the South Shetlands have an interesting history dating back to sealing and whaling eras. They also house the majority of Antarctic logistics and research stations, some of which you are welcome to visit whilst exploring the islands.

Day 3

Deception Island

As you set your sights on Deception Island, you would be forgiven for thinking of it as a lagoon. Contrary to what you see above the surface, the stunning circular vistas of Deception Island are actually due to the island being made up of a flooded volcano caldera, which last erupted in the 1970s. For the more daring charter guests, the sea of Deception Island is slightly warmed by the hot rocks below, making this the warmest place in Antarctica to swim. Home to one of the region’s largest chinstrap penguin colonies, the island also has a fascinating geology and a history of shore-based whaling.

Day 4

The Dango Coast & Gerlache Strait

Spend two days exploring the numerous islands and channels of this breathtakingly beautiful area on the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Observe enormous colonies of gentoo penguins, and you may even have the opportunity to visit an active scientific research station. With the Zodiacs, you will cruise among icebergs, massive glaciers and ice cliffs. Paradise Bay, Errera Channel, Neko Harbour, Port Lockroy, Lemaire Channel, Cuverville Island and the Penola Strait are among the places you can visit. The options are numerous and all provide incredible experiences. Each day you and your experienced Captain will discuss the possibilities and select the best sites for the conditions.

Day 5

Day 6

Antarctic Sound Weddell Sea

Antarctic Sound is located at the very north eastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, and is also known as iceberg Alley due to the large tabular icebergs drifting north from the Weddell Sea. If conditions allow, you may be able to land on Paulet Island, Brown Bluff or Devil Island to visit Adelié penguin colonies. You might want to spend some time exploring the northern reaches of the Weddell Sea. Search the ice floes for emperor penguins that breed on the nearby Snow Hill Island during the winter. The magnificent emperors are difficult to see during the summer months because their colonies have dispersed, but if you devote some time to searching you may come across a newly fledged juvenile resting.

Day 8

Flight to Punta Arenas

Return on your explorer yacht to the South Shetland Islands, arriving in time for your flight north to Punta Arenas. The departure time will be confirmed closer to the departure date and is subject to weather delays. Weather permitting, arrive in Punta Arenas in the afternoon and explore this city on Chile’s southernmost part of Patagonia. Because of the uncertainty of your flight time from King George Island, it is strongly advised that you spend the night in Punta Arenas and schedule your return flight for the following day.
