Founded in the early 14th-century, Villefranche has also been celebrated among artists over the years, ranging from the famous writer Aldous Huxley to abstract artist Pablo Picasso and the poet Jean Cocteau.

Port de la Darse

A historic military port built in 1550 in the bay of Villefranche, it is the only natural deep water port in this area of the Mediterranean. Decreed a Royal Port in 1713, a dry dock was added soon after, which can still be seen today.

Citadel

Looming over the bay, the Citadel “Saint Elme” is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dating back to the 16th century, this stone fortress houses an auditorium, museums, the city of crafts, hanging gardens, and the city’s art collections.

Old Town

'Cocteau' Chapelle Saint-Pierre

A sacred place, the Saint-Pierre chapel was restored and decorated by Jean Cocteau and features illustrations of the life of the Apostle Peter. An outstanding example of the fusion between art, religion and spirituality, this tiny chapel is more than worth a visit.
